Paul Carmichael

Backfill Manager: North America

Paul is a Mining and Backfill Specialist and leads the North American Backfill Team, based in Paterson & Cooke’s Sudbury Office. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering in 2012 and began his career in underground mining operations in Australia as a graduate for BHP Billiton.

He has since worked in the global underground mining industry including recent projects in Australia, Saudi Arabia, Canada, U.S.A, Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador and the Philippines. Paul’s specific focus is on backfill operations, design, and improvement. His expertise includes backfill system operations, binder and strength optimisation, hydraulic modelling of underground distribution systems, backfill logistics, and start up/commissioning of backfill operations.

Paul also uses his practical field experience to conduct training for operators, engineers and management, whether it be as a regular presenter at P&C’s annual backfill course, conference short courses or directly with clients on site.
