Computational Fluid Dynamics

CFD - a reliable and cost-effective engineering tool to solve slurry flow and wear problems in the mining industry

Many pieces of slurry equipment are prone to process inconsistencies due to insufficient mixing or non-uniform particle size distribution. Some components also experience high or localised wear due to the flow patterns unique to an application. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), these issues can be mitigated in a timely fashion by understanding flow and optimising geometry to maximise consistent performance.

With today’s enhanced computing power, CFD is even more valuable to the mining industry. The design, problem resolution, and validation of the processes utilised with slurry mining equipment are uniquely suited to the strengths of CFD. Computational simulations can be completed quickly and effectively with a high degree of accuracy and confidence.

This can assist in equipment geometry optimisation for a fraction of the cost of physical prototypes. Even slight improvements gained from CFD optimisation can lead to a significant reduction in operating costs and downtime, increased profitability, and can help ensure the safe operation of an effective and productive mining business.

CPF Slurry Pump Tank CFD Analysis, Quellaveco Copper Mine, Peru

Anglo American is implementing a Coarse Particle Flotation (CPF) plant as an add-on to their existing Quellaveco operation. It was identified that the CPF plant needs more of a modulated feed rather than the 0% or 100% flow as originally designed. The slurry pump tank was identified as a method to achieve modulated flow but required shutting down one of the two pumps and using the overflow. P&C completed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to predict the solids settling in the tank, the flush water pressure required to flush the settled solids, and the minimum level in the tank before the pumps would start to cavitate.
