Job Description

This position is for a Test Technologist / Engineer for the Slurry Test Laboratory at our Cape Town office. The applicant should ideally have 3 – 5 years’ experience in a mining or industrial plant environment. A formal qualification in mechanical or civil engineering is required. Although the applicant will work mainly at the Cape Town Test Laboratory, some test work will be conducted at mine sites.

Tasks:

Perform or assist in the performance of the following tasks under supervision:

  • Slurry rheology characterisation
  • Pipe loop tests
  • Thickener test work
  • Filtration test work
  • Design of unique or customised test equipment
  • Travel to mine sites to conduct on-site test work
  • Analysis of test work data
  • Preparation of laboratory test reports
  • Perform day-to-day administrative tasks for the slurry test facility, when required
  • Preparation of test work proposals
  • Project management
Responsibilities:
  • Lead by example, practicing safe behaviour and habits
  • Contribute and/or lead as part of the Slurry Test Laboratory Team
  • Supervise the operation and maintenance of test equipment (pumps, valves etc.)
  • Perform at a high-level of quality and productivity in the Slurry Test Laboratory Team
  • Application of technical skills to perform problem solving and engineering tasks to solve complex testing requirements
  • Ongoing professional development

Minimum Requirements & Competencies:
  • BTech or BSc engineering degree
  • Three to five years’ experience in mining or industrial plant environment, ideally in some type of test capacity
  • Strong presentation and technical writing skills, especially technical reports
  • Strong interpersonal skills and desire to work in a hands-on slurry test facility environment
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel
  • Fluent in English, both written and oral
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel
  • South African citizenship or valid work visa

  • Self-motivated and able to work hard, act professionally and make decisions independently
