Job Description

The Senior Design Draughtsperson produces mechanical and manufacturing drawings in the mining and resources industry. The work mainly entails the drawing and detailing of slurry transport systems and specialized mining equipment.  He/she reports to the Line Manager and assists to ensure that drawing deliverables are done accurately, correctly and on time, according to company standards and procedures.

Tasks:
  • Assist engineers with concept development and the designing of specialized equipment and then produce detailed drawings for production and / or fabrication
  • Perform material take-offs and develop of bills of quantities, equipment lists and cost estimates and specifications as required for project deliverables
  • Check, review and mark-up of drawings ensuring compliance and adherence to standards
  • If required, travel to sites to measure up and draw/detail equipment and systems
Responsibilities:
  • Lead the project drawing team or contribute as part of the drawing team on projects
  • Interact with engineers to acquire information and drawing requirements for project work
  • Application of drawing skills to perform engineering design, detailing and drawing tasks
  • Consistently deliver professional drawings to the required company standards and drawing procedures

Job Specification

The position requires a career design draughtsperson who has built up knowledge and wisdom through immersion and exposure to independently produce designs and drawings of consistently high quality. The person must be able to contribute to the design capacity of the design office rather than simply produce drawings as instructed.

Minimum Requirements and Competencies:
  • Formal draughting training from a draughting institute registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training
  • National diploma or equivalent level or mechanical / civil technologist
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in either heavy engineering, manufacturing, process plant and/or mining environments with demonstrable drawing deliverables
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience on AutoCAD (2D)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ on industrial 3D design software, e.g. AutoCAD Inventor, Solid Works, etc.
  • High level of computer literacy with good skills in MS Excel and Word
  • Able to solve problems independently through research and information gathering via library, internet, equipment, catalogues and supplier contracts
  • A valid drivers’ license as well as willing and able to travel nationally and internationally
Useful Experience:
  • Solid modelling / 3D drawing experience (preferably with Inventor, AutoCAD or Plant 3D)
  • Site measurement of equipment and systems
  • Workshop, manufacturing or fabrication experience
