Currently the Cornwall office focuses on mine backfill and surface tailings management systems, offering services from conceptual engineering through Pre-feasibility and Feasibility study levels. Through cooperation with the wider Paterson & Cooke group of companies, Basic and Detailed engineering services can be facilitated and managed through the Cornwall office. Existing system audits and upgrade reviews are also undertaken.

Stephen is a Mining Engineer with 12 years’ experience of providing consultancy services to the minerals industry, with particular specialisation in tailings dewatering and mine backfill. He has a Mining Engineering degree from Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall, and is a chartered engineer with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. In 2013 Stephen established the Paterson & Cooke Cornwall Office.

Paul Ainsworth

Paul is a Process Engineer and has worked on a wide range of international paste and process related projects. His experience focuses on the development of process flow sheets, equipment design, commissioning and trouble shooting. Paul has extensive knowledge of solid/liquid separation test work that has involved many different ore types and applications. Paul joined the UK based Paterson & Cooke Practice in 2014.

Morwenna is a graduate mining engineer having recently completed a Masters in Mining Engineering from the Camborne School of Mines where she specialised in backfill. With a proven track record in training, project management within local government and as a graduate member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, Morwenna will be building on her engineering foundation while supporting the Cornwall office of Paterson & Cooke.

Damian Granlund

Damian Granlund

Damian is a chartered Chemical Engineer with 7 years of industrial experience. He has led a wide variety of industrial CAPEX projects in the Mining and Oil and Gas sectors, specialising in equipment specification and plant design. Damian joined Paterson & Cooke in February 2015 and now focuses on hydraulic modelling of surface and underground pipeline systems.

The Cape Town office, founded in 1991, has extensive experience in the analysis and design of slurry pipeline systems. The office offers a full range of engineering services, from pre-feasibility to detailed design, as well as construction assistance and commissioning. The adjoining 1200 m2 Slurry Test Facility includes large scale slurry pump and pipeline test loops of up to 300 mm in diameter, viscometers, a materials characterisation laboratory, as well as specialised Pilot Plant facilities.

Dr. Angus Paterson is the managing director of the Cape Town office of Paterson & Cooke, having founded the company together with Dr. Robert Cooke in 1991. Angus has been directly involved in analysis and design of slurry transport systems since 1987 and has worked on long distance slurry pipelines, underground paste and backfill distribution systems and numerous conventional, thickened and paste tailings disposal systems.

Peter Goosen

Peter-Goosen

Peter joined Paterson & Cooke in 1993 and has since been involved in a wide variety of slurry pipeline related projects. Initially responsible for managing all slurry related laboratory work at the Cape Town laboratories he later gained extensive design experience through projects ranging from high-level studies to detailed design, construction and commissioning phases. Peter is responsible for overseeing hydraulic design and development of slurry related hydraulic design capability. He is a director of the Company.

Michael Fehrsen

Mike worked for various mines in South Africa as engineer, both underground and in surface operations before joining Paterson & Cooke in July 1999. He has worked on a variety of slurry transportation projects, from conceptual studies through to detailed design and commissioning. As Engineering Manager for the Cape Town office, he is responsible for maintaining and developing our detailed engineering capabilities. His principal expertise is in the mechanical design of pumping and pipeline systems, the development of control and functional specifications as well as specialist transient flow and stress analysis work.

Fritz van Sittert

Fritz-van-Sittert

Fritz completed his BTech (cum laude) degree in 1995 and received his MTech (cum laude) in 1999 for novel research done on the turbulent flow of non-Newtonian slurries in rough pipes. He is responsible for administering the Paterson & Cooke slurry test laboratory and the continued development of slurry testing equipment.

Nic Marais

Nic-Marais

Dr. Nic Marais completed a civil engineering degree before specializing in nonlinear structural mechanics. He worked on marine and maritime structures at Liebenberg & Stander Maritime and Industrial from 1989 to 1992. Before joining Paterson & Cooke in 2006, Nic pursued an academic career at the University of Cape Town (1993 to 2002) and his own consultancy (2003-2006). At Paterson & Cooke, Nic has participated in hydro-transport projects ranging from heavy minerals mining, dredging and slurry pipelines, to the design of sand hoppers and other hydraulic structures. He also contributes to company management and administration.

Dawood Wepener

Dawood is a Senior Engineer in the Cape Town office and has been with Paterson & Cooke since 2006. He has worked on a variety of slurry and water transportation projects, from conceptual studies through to detailed design and commissioning. He has expertise in the mechanical design of pumping and pipeline systems, the development of control and functional specifications as well as specialist transient flow and stress analysis work. Dawood trained and worked as an engineer for Harmony Gold Mines before moving to Turgis Consulting in 2002.

Nicol Russouw

Nicol Russouw

Nicol joined Paterson & Cooke in 2009 and has been involved in numerous engineering studies and construction and commissioning projects. Previously he was involved in the design, construction and commissioning of mineral processing plants, where he gained valuable experience in manufacturing and construction. Nicol’s focus is on hydraulic transient flow analysis, simulation and control of pumping and pipeline systems. He is also frequently involved in the hydraulic and mechanical design of pumping systems and the commissioning thereof.

Carl Zietsman

Carl Zietsman

Carl is a senior engineer at Paterson & Cooke and joined the company in 2008. He has worked as lead mechanical engineer and / or project manager on numerous slurry pump and pipeline projects, from conceptual-level design to detailed design and construction. Prior to joining P&C he worked at a multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm designing building services, e.g. potable water supply and HVAC systems. Carl also has a keen interest in general business management.

Mark-Bennet

Mark completed his apprenticeship as a Tool, Jig & Die Maker in 1999 after a 4 year internship in the automotive industry. Having worked closely with the design office he decided to make the move to draughting. After completing a draughting course in 2001 he worked as a draughtsman in the automotive and food industry before joining Paterson & Cooke in June 2008. He currently manages the Drawing Office.

Adré van Zyl manages the Field Services Africa office of Paterson & Cooke in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has extensive experience in the mineral and metals processing industry and spent 17 years working on various major mining projects as Project Manager and as Construction and Commissioning Manager throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Adré joined Paterson & Cooke in  March 2015.

Eon de Vos

Eon De Vos

Eon de Vos is a Metallurgical Engineer with 13 years’ experience within the sub-Saharan Africa minerals processing sector, of which four years has been in operations and eight in technical sales/support and consultancy.  Eon has had hands-on involvement in, and management of, various minerals operations, brownfields projects and process optimization. In mineral processing his experience ranges from crushing, milling, hydrometallurgy, flotation, thickening and filtration. He joined Paterson & Cooke in January 2015 as Process Manager.

John Maré

John Mare

John Maré has been involved in construction and project management in south as well as sub-Saharan Africa. He has also been involved in thickening, flotation and filtration technology since 2001. He is very well known in the African region for his role in optimization and for debottlenecking projects for brownfields operations in the gold, platinum and copper sector. He has more than 12 years’ experience in design and process equipment services, with special knowledge of mining operations and optimization of mineral processing plants.
